What is SAM.gov registration?
SAM.gov registration is the free federal registration a company must have — and keep active — to be awarded a federal contract, and it must be renewed annually.
Also written as: SAM registration, System for Award Management, register on SAM.gov.
FAR 4.1102 requires prospective contractors to be registered in SAM at the time an offer or quotation is submitted, with limited exceptions. Registration covers entity validation, your UEI and CAGE code, the NAICS codes you can perform under, your representations and certifications, and the banking details you will be paid through.
The renewal requirement catches more firms than the initial registration does. Registration lapses annually, and an expired registration at the wrong moment — while an offer is pending, or at award — can cost the contract. Nothing warns your customers; the record simply stops showing as active.
It is free, from start to finish. The entity validation step is the slow part and can take weeks if your legal name and address do not match your incorporation records exactly, which is the single most common reason a registration stalls.
